Is your teen at risk for a prom-night DUI arrest?

Every parent wants to believe that their teen would never drink and drive or experiment with drugs and then climb behind the wheel. But that sort of magical thinking can lead to arrests for drinking and driving — or far worse.

Peer pressure is a powerful force of nature in the vulnerable teenage years and coupled with the heady thrill that surrounds everything prom-related, it is quite possible that your teen could tipple more than sugary soda on prom night.

Tips for parents to help keep teens safer and sober

Before the prom night plans are set, make sure that you network with your teen’s friends’ parents to make sure the after parties are supervised and drug- and alcohol-free. You could also offer to host an after-prom breakfast where couples can eat and catch a couple of hours of rest under the watchful eye of parents.

Choose a safe word for emergencies

Sometimes, teens get overwhelmed when offered a drink or illicit drugs. They don’t yet have the awareness to advocate for themselves and refuse. Pick a safe word that could easily be worked into a phone conversation with a parent, e.g., “sweater.” That way, if your teen calls and says they are having fun but wish they brought their sweater, mom or dad can be there quick to remove them from harm’s way.

What if your child gets arrested for DUI?

It happens, and there will be plenty of time for recriminations. Your first priority is to ensure that your child is safe. You may need bail money. When you talk to your son or daughter, remind them to remain silent until you have had the opportunity to retain legal assistance for them.
